The Wisdom of Ben

Ben Franklin once said that those who are willing to sacrifice their liberty for security deserve neither.  Ben was certainly an opinionated fellow.  Just where does he get off saying something like that?  I will tell you where.  Throughout the generations people, individual human-beings, have given up everything including their lives to secure our right to live free.  For anyone to be willing to give up any part of that hard-won liberty for the sake of the illusion of safety strikes me as incredibly ungrateful......and irresponsible.  Freedom carries with it risk.  We must stand a continuous watch to protect it.  We must work at nurturing and preserving it.  And we must pass on to our posterity the love of it so deep-seated that the desire to preserve it at all costs is inherent.
